New Jersey Needs Clean Elections!
Clean Elections is a voluntary full public campaign financing program for candidates seeking election to the State Senate or General Assembly. Under this voluntary program, qualified candidates who collected 400 to 800 $10 contributions from voters in their district and who agree to forgo private campaign cash, receive public funding grants to run for office. In 2007, the Program Pilot was only available to voters and candidates in the 14th, 24th and 37th legislative districts. The 2007 Pilot was great success with 80% of the eligible candidates successfully qualifying for the program. Now the program is slated for expansion and in June 2008 the Assembly State Government Committee with bipartisan support passed A-100, the New Jersey Fair and Clean Elections Act out of committee by a vote of 4-1. In the next couple of days members of the legislative clean elections ad-hoc committee will reconvene to discuss the reauthorization of New Jersey’s Clean Elections program. We need your help to insure that members of the ad-hoc committee hear from voters like you- urging them to keep the momentum of clean elections moving forward and to reauthorize the program this fall. TELL GOV. CORZINE TO PROTECT NJ CABLE/TELECOM CONSUMERS BY VETOING A2906!
On June 23, the NJ State Senate and Assembly very quietly passed A-2906 (Chivikula) and S-1886 (Lesniak, Sweeney), a huge corporate give-away that is anti-consumer and anti-worker. The legislation seeks to eliminate public oversight of the financial wheelings and dealings of private equity firms, huge holding corporations and media giants and would prevent the Board of Public Utilities from reviewing these complex transactions to determine if they will undermine the public interest and the provision of affordable and reliable communications services. The BPU needs to retain oversight over these financial transactions to ensure that the consumer, worker and the public's interest at-large are being protected. Tell Governor Corzine to do what is best for New Jersey consumers by issuing a VETO on A2906.

HELP END NJ's HOME FORECLOSURE CRISIS!
This week the NJ Home Ownership Preservation Act (A2517/S1599) will be considered in two state legislative committees. We need your help to make sure that both of these bills are passed out of the Senate Commerce and Assembly Housing and Local Government Committees.

CONTACT NJ DECISION MAKERS AND TELL THEM MEDICAID CO-PAYS ARE WRONG FOR NJ!
Medicaid co-pays must be removed from the FY 2009 State budget. Medicaid beneficiaries have this insurance for a very good reason: they have extremely limited incomes. If co-pays for prescription medications are enacted, these individuals will struggle even more. They will be forced to make possibly life-threatening choices between getting needed medicines and paying for other necessities, such as food. Co-pays must be removed from the FY 2009 State budget to truly give these individuals the coverage they need, to prevent their health from deteriorating and to avoid the resulting high costs, which the State will need to pay, of emergency room visits and hospitalizations.

HEALTH CARE REFORM MOVING IN NJ LEGISLATURE, CONSUMER PROTECTIONS ARE NEEDED!
S-1557 (Vitale) proposes to establish a legal mandate that all NJ children have health insurance, (and proof be provided on tax returns), expand eligibility for parents up to 200% of poverty to enroll in NJ FamilyCare, and proposes to change a number of insurance regulations including allowing private health insurers to charge individuals higher rates based on their age. S 1557 must be amended to ensure that the proposal achieves its goal of expanding access to high quality, affordable, health care for NJ residents and does not harm consumers.
